Neverland
This work is presented in one of the last available sites for construction in Reignier. Is symbolises the possible future housing projects through a visual reference to Monopoly, a game that embodies our society’s love for housing speculation and profit. The installation reflects on the urban mutation that has changed the face of Reignier and denounces the construction of housing estates that do not take into consideration the individual. The work is an amusing and ironic comment on the evolution of the community space.

Plug-in City (Houston)
Plug-in City is a series of videos filmed in the city of Houston, Texas. The title is inspired by a utopian architectural project that proposed housing elements which attach themselves to the existing city space as a theoretical solution to the question of periurban expansion. Through the videos, Bublex explores the urban environment of Houston which is characterised by a total absence of historical references or remarkable features. His camera-eye travels the roads of this urban landscape in which the ‘Plug-in’ project is in full progress. Alain Bublex’s videos open D2 up to other periurban contexts, reminding us that the phenomenon of rurbanisation (rural-urban) exists throughout the Western World.

Régnons (We Reign)
On arriving in Reignier, the attention of passers by is attracted by a second road sign. Through a play on words and conjugation, the artist toys with the visual codes of road signage and questions the use of language in the communal space. The second unexpected panel leaves the passer-by perplex as to the name of the town and its identity.
What does this plural mean? On exiting the town, one sees another road sign; ‘Reign’. What does this command mean? The parallel between the possession of a private and a public space reveals itself. The work explores the appropriation of the town by its inhabitants and the power of the individual in the community.

Six Banners
Six Banners is a series of signs spread out in the communal space which explores the collective imagination and the political unconscious.
First of all the artist listed and catalogued the use of the communal space in Reignier, categorising by zones of activity and exchange. By placing his banners in the context of the urban environment, traditionally devoid of meaning, Codron seeks to intervene at the heart of political life (in the sense of the community). The inhabitants are invited to discover or react to these textual perturbations placed in their daily environment. The ‘messages’ project ideas and images into the real and mental landscape and stimulate a search for meaning in the communal space.
Dejode & Lacombe
Cosmic Banditos
The artist duo, Dejode & Lacombe, invite the inhabitants of Reignier to participate in the project ‘Cosmic Banditos’. Playing with the recent phenomenon of car ‘pimping’ – the creative personalisation of one’s vehicle – the duo will organise a car rally on the evening of the opening, inviting the local youth to join in with the motorbikes, scooters and cars. A monumental sculpture created specifically for the event will be left of the Church Square throughout the D2 festival, leaving an indelible trace of this anarchic parade.
San Keller
San Keller’s Holiday’s in Reignier
From the 18th to 22nd April, San Keller will spend his holidays in Reignier. In order to discover the hidden treasures of the community and the region, San placed an advertisement in a local newspaper, The Messager, two weeks before the opening. He invited the local inhabitants to post their ideas for sightseeing on the D2 blog. San will spend four days getting to know the region and building connections with the local inhabitants. You can share San’s experiences on the blog from the 23rd April, where the photos taken during his holidays in Reignier will be displayed.

MooiTravels, Travel Agency
Judy van Luyk will temporarily open a travel agency in the heart of Reignier. Unlike traditional agencies, Judy proposes improbable holiday packages based in Reignier, by transforming the town into a fictional holiday resort. The agency will introduce you to known and unknown parts of the community.

A village street: Reignier. An axis: the D2 motorway. A strange object placed on the side of the road, like a road safety barrier on wheels. Is it an item for road protection, a barrier for nocturnal road blocks or an awaiting blockade? Have the rigid rules that regulate the public space contributed to the sclerosis of the communal space. This art work aims to break with the usual monotony of the communal space during the duration of D2. The work imposes no clear function, but contents itself to patiently wait on its wheels, changing position in the town from time to time.

Does the Laughter Statue really exist in Reignier? Is the sense of humour of the Reignerands more developed than the average? Or is this just an isolated jape that a practical joker has put on the internet? Microsillons will lead the investigation and question the communal space through the tradition of the public monument, the ultimate incarnation of power and representation of the populace through art.

Lyrique(s) de la marche (Lyrics of the Walk)
For the D2 Art Festival, the duo’s Social Sculpture Studio invited the inhabitants of Reignier to participate in the co-production of an art work in the communal space. The contributors were invited to recite a spiritual experience that while walking along the edge of the D2, camera in hand. They tell us about the local WWII resistance, a beloved landscape, a difficult childhood experience, and through this, reveal the presence of the universal in us all. At the end of the story, the participants hands over the camera and reveals their faces.
Séverine Verdan
Célébration
Célébration aims to transcend a spectacular event in order to celebrate the passage of time at the Fruitière, an abandoned dairy factory, once the centre of industry and employment in Reignier. The work plays with the traditional codes of a public spectacle by creating a non-event. Once the ‘show’ is over, the public is invited to discover the building and its history through leaflets which will be handed out.
Speed Debating
Speed Debating explores the possibility of a debate on contemporary art between art world professionals and the general public of Reignier. Using the format of speed dating events, the performance invites participants to exchange ideas in a defined lapse of time, artificially limiting the possibility of a real discussion. The only possible result of this confrontation is the formal experience of the debate.

D2 – Art Infiltration in the Communal Space of Reignier
Event : 19th April – 18th May 2008

D2 is a contemporary art festival which is both an event and a research experiment on art in the communal space. The festival will open on the 19th April in Reignier, Haute-Savoie, and takes the notion of the ‘annex town’ as its point of departure. The project itself is named after the departmental motorway that passes through the centre of Reignier. This vital artery has played a fundamental role in shaping the community socially, economically and geographically over recent years.
Like many other ‘annex towns’, Reignier has evolved from its original identity as a farming community to become a rurban zone in a state of constant evolution. This development can largely be attributed to its economic and social dependence on neighbouring cities, such as Annemasse, Annecy and Geneva.
A selection of international contemporary artists have been invited to create in-situ projects in the communal space of Reignier :

Unlike the traditional notion of the exhibition – in which objects are put on show - the projects in D2 are designed to infiltrate – or penetrate – the daily life of the community.
The works dialogue and play with the codes inherent in the community space, thus generating micro-situations or unexpected encounters for passers-by. In her project, ‘Régnons’ (We Reign), the French artist Diana Chaumontet appropriates the language of road signs to question the relationship of power between the individual and the municipality. Renaud Codron places banners in selected sites around Reignier which play on the visual language used by bill board advertisements. Instead of imposing a fixed message, the spectator is free to make his own interpretation.
The festival will also be punctuated by micro-events, performances and actions in the communal space. Certain events have a fixed date, such as Séverine Verdan’s ‘Celebration’ (25th April) or her ‘Speed Debating’ (17th May) at the end of the festival. Others are more unpredictable; the Swiss artist, San Keller will spend his ‘holidays’ in Reignier from the 18th to 22nd April; the Geneva duo, Microsillons, will carry out their enquiry into the mysterious statue dedicated to ‘Laughter’ which supposedly exists in Reignier.
The festival is both an event and a research laboratory on the functions and possibilities of art in the communal space. A publication will be released in December 2008 bringing together texts and documents from the D2 festival and invited contributors.
